PODCASTS! PODCASTS! PODCASTS!

Updated: Aug 9, 2020

Having dispensable time at home has meant my idée fixe to podcasts has somewhat skyrocketed. Not only have I adjusted to different subject matter within the art world, but I have delved into new Visual Culture territory, and even begun an exploration into the legalities of art. So, these are a few podcasts that have been particularly compelling:

1) Hyperallergic

Possibly my favourite podcast for the arts. It fuses conversational Art with current affairs. For me the joy of Art History is discovering the career pathways that interweave it. Hyperallergic is the perfect podcast to engage those who are passionate about art and how it shapes society, but also for those who perhaps want to discover more about the extraordinary relevance art plays politically, economically and culturally. Furthermore, the interviewer/host Hrag Vartanian enters the conversational podcast; often joined by an esteemed guest, asking questions that prompt the most fascinating responses, never failing to connect the topic of discussion with the dynamics of society at present. This is a progressive Art podcast that introduces to the listener, new ways of thinking about, and perceiving art.

Here are a few of my favourite episodes:

The Monumental Impact of the Black Lives Matter Protest.

How the US is Treating the Arts During the Pandemic the #CancelRent Movement

What Artists Need to Know About Taxes

The Relationship Between Art and Law Since 1960

2) The Great Women Artists Podcast With Katy Hessel

I was introduced to Katy Hessel on a Webinar set up by the Courtauld Institute's research forum, I was absolutely mesmerised by her passion for both presenting the artists who were about to speak, but also the thoughtful questions she asked subsequently. I started listening to her podcast on Spotify and was immediately transfixed by the diversity of her interviewees. The most eclectic myriad of women in the art scene, ranging through experience, profession and age, this is a perfect podcast if you want to listen to the masterminds behind the global art scene today. Its conversational style makes it an easy listen, and yet Hessel takes time to listen, allowing a true insight into these artistic minds.

Here are a few of my favourite episodes:

Season 1. Ep 1. Eleanor Nairne on Lee Krasner

Season 1. Ep 2. Es Devlin

Season 1. Ep 35. Natalie Lettner on Maria Lassnig

I also recommend following Katy Hessels Instagram: @thegreatwomenartists for a daily fix of artistic inspiration.

3) The Art Law Podcast

Perhaps a more mature podcast, and subsequently less of an easy listen. This podcast tackles the legalistic elements of art, I personally enjoyed this podcast at home, when I could pay full attention to it, undistracted. Nonetheless, this podcast is excellent in fusing art lovers to the world of litigation, science and finance. Understanding the legalities of art is something I have become increasingly fascinated with over lockdown.

Here are a few of my favourite episodes:

Art, Censorship and the First Amendment

Moral Rights in Street Art: The 5Pointz Story

What Can Science Tell Us About Art?
